Week Two – Pals of Seguin Island Gentle Station

It was every week of climate and winter repairs!  I consider I stated one thing concerning the photo voltaic system final week. We discovered why they name it photo voltaic, lol. Three days of fog, rain & cloudy skies lowered the effectivity of the system. Happily we’re in a position so as to add generator energy to the combination when wanted.  With out central heating within the outdated lightkeepers residence, it was about 53 levels inside, 50 exterior this week. The 30 knot wind gusts didn’t assist – ha! However we bundled up, simply positive, ready for that sunshine to come back out once more – and it did 😁. The previous couple of days have been wonderful!

These early days of our summer time are actually all about getting the lawns and trails prepared for friends and cleansing & fixing up the home to really feel like residence. With the nicer climate, our tans are coming alongside simply positive! (or is that the iron within the water??) Positively getting our train and discovering some lengthy unused muscle mass. Rick’s background as a grasp auto technician is invaluable right here. If you’re residing and dealing in buildings that have been constructed within the 1800’s, there’s at all times one thing that wants fixin’ or improvising. From yard & upkeep gear repairs to clogged kitchen pipes, he has thus far discovered a solution to get issues operating easily on this superb island.

It goes with out saying, however we’ll say it anyway.  The Seguin Island Gentle is the crown jewel and purpose we’re right here. She is the best mild in Maine with a strong uncommon first-order Fresnel lens (pronounced fru-NEL). Because the 2nd oldest mild on the Maine coast, it’s an honor to be entrusted along with her care, together with the duty of gently dusting & cleansing every of its 282 glass prisms which were right here since 1857. (Effectively, possibly not all in someday…). The lens itself stands 9 toes tall and is a set mild “beehive” design. Her new LED mild might be seen 14 miles out to sea and places out a magical glow round the home at night time.

In 1794, President Washington accepted constructing the primary lighthouse on Seguin. The waters listed here are identified to be fairly tough, with quick tides popping out of the Kennebec River assembly up with robust winds off the Atlantic. The truth is our someday every week to come back to shore might be cancelled or postponed due to those self same situations right now.

So the primary lighthouse (1795) was a easy picket construction which lasted solely 24 years within the climate right here. Its location is marked on the island, not removed from the home. The 2nd lighthouse was constructed from stone however ultimately succumbed to the climate by 1857. At the moment the prevailing stone tower was constructed and this yr celebrates its 164th birthday – now that’s endurance!  In fact she’s had some traditionally correct touch-ups over time, however haven’t all of us!! (I imply, I used to be a blondie my first 6 years, proper?!)

We have now turn out to be believers within the assertion that “Seguin Island is likely one of the foggiest locations on the earth”. We’ve been right here simply 2 weeks and there are days we can not see the ocean!  Loving the fog sign – 2 blasts each 20 seconds. It’s simply loud sufficient to listen to but not be annoying. (One thing we had questioned about!) We’ll share some fog tales one other time…

We’re preparing for our 2nd journey to shore courtesy of Cap’n Ethan. He’s one of the best! He grew up on the Kennebec River and when he’s not delivering of us to Seguin, he’s hauling lobster pots. Our Maine man, through & through. So final week we caught up on laundry, groceries, issues for the home & water. Mistake!!! Cuz once you do every part on one journey, meaning it’s a must to carry every part up the 1/4 mile hill by yourselves! On this case we have been fortunate, one of many FOSILS members had labored on the tram and made it out there to push up the tracks. Hahahaha – did I say fortunate? It took us 7-8 relaxation breaks to catch our breath and stand up the hill – however I suppose it was higher than 3 – 4 journeys up & down on foot. In order chances are you’ll guess, we gained’t be doing every part every week.

We’re starting to have guests come as much as the lighthouse now that Memorial Day has handed and the climate is so stunning. What a deal with to go to with of us and listen to the tales of the place they reside, earlier Seguin visits, the place they’re heading subsequent. Most are thrilled to get a tour to the highest of the sunshine, many for the primary time. Its such a powerful piece of historical past, and the view can’t be beat! : )) We are also seeing that some boats come into the cove and simply moor for the night time with out developing. Until its a NNE wind, the cove might be fairly protected for a starry in a single day keep.

Hope you benefit from the photographs – catch ya subsequent week!
